Mentoring Program
Focus Forward’s mentoring program is only possible through the generous time given by volunteers.
We welcome volunteers from all walks of life and strive to find volunteer mentors who represent the population we serve, including individuals with lived experience. Focus Forward partners with several university and college programs to provide internship opportunities. For more information, contact our Volunteer Coordinator.
“I had a unbelievable first year experience at Focus Forward and their staff. This is a great learning facility and possible future place of employment. More of our students need to be placed there as it gives direct experience in applying theory and interventions to clients. Absolutely priceless.”

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Site Program
Can You Volunteer to Help Foster Youth Boost Their Income and Financial Skills?
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is managed by the IRS and offers free tax return preparation for qualified individuals. You can volunteer to provide this free tax service to California's transition-age current and former foster youth, helping them save hundreds or even thousands of dollars during the 2022 tax season! No professional experience is needed to become a volunteer.
Free Tax Preparer Training:
To become a specialized VITA volunteer, you must complete virtual tax preparer training and certification, which is scheduled for January 2023. Trainings are recorded and self-study is available. For volunteers seeking additional support in completing the training and testing, virtual study sessions will be available.
Volunteers are needed during the tax season starting February 2023.
Volunteers can work flexible days, evenings, and/or weekends. Volunteers typically pick a set day and time to volunteer each week between February-March 2023. Support can be offered either online or in-person.
